School Closings, Delays, and Early Dismissals
In case of snow, ice or other unusual conditions such as power outages and excessive heat, school officials may decide to close school, delay school opening or send students home early. News about these decisions is distributed through a variety of outlets (see below).
Here is what happens in each situation when the school schedule changes:
Schools Closed - All school buildings are closed. The decision is made as soon as possible on all information outlets (listed below). All school activities are canceled unless otherwise announced. Administrative offices usually remain open.
Delayed Opening - Schools will open later than usual; opening times will be announced on all information outlets (listed below) as soon as a decision is made.
Early Dismissal - Schools will dismiss early if conditions require. Dismissal times will be announced on all information outlets (listed below) and will also be announced using HCS Instant Alert Notification System. All parents and guardians will be notified by phone (work, home, and cell), email, and text messaging (the notification method is determined by the information each parent/guardian provides to the school). It is the parent"s responsibility to keep the school informed when contact information changes. All afternoon school activities are usually canceled.
All area media outlets are notified in the event of school closings, delays and early dismissals. Radio and TV stations decide whether they will broadcast the information once they receive it from the school system. Here is where parents and students can find the most up-to-date information:
