Course Description: Algebra is a fun and exciting course that covers all fundamentals that will be a part of the rest of the math you will ever do. Understanding basic concepts in Algebra I is key to being successful in Geometry, Algebra II, Statistics, Calculus and beyond! All topics covered will fall into the categories of expressions and operations, equations and inequalities, functions, and statistics.

Classroom Expectations: In order for our classroom to run smoothly and for all students to feel comfortable learning, there are a few things I will need from my students:

    • Come to class on time and prepared.
    • Be respectful to everyone in our class.
    • Actively participate in class every day.
    • Try our hardest to limit distractions
    • Abide by the “10/10” rule. (Students will not be permitted to leave class for any reason during the first ten minutes of class or the last ten minutes of class)

** Cell phones are expected to be kept in backpacks during class time. If you cannot resist temptation, it will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent in the front office.

Absences: If you are absent for any reason, it is your responsibility to come get your absent work from me. You are expected to make up any missing work within 3 days after you recieve your absent work. Any work not made up will be entered into the gradebook as a 0. If you miss a review day, you must still take the test on the test day. Remember absences affect your grade because you are missing instruction that is difficult to completely make up.

Missing Grades: If you are absent, or do not turn in an assignment, a 0 will be put in the gradebook.  If you recieve a 0 because of absence, a note will be made and the grade will be changed once the work is made up.  This helps me and you see an accurate representation of your grade at all times.

    Class Materials:

    • (2) Composition Notebooks or two subject notebooks (one for each semester)
    • Pencils
    • Erasers (cap or block)
    • ( 1 ) 8 pack of markers
    • ( 1 ) 12 pack of colored pencils
    • ( 1 ) Scissors
    • Glue Stick

** Teacher Wish List: It would be so helpful if you are able to purchase just ONE of the items on this list and send to school with your student to use in our classroom. This is not a requirement.

    • Tissues
    • Hand Sanitizer
    • Lysol Wipes
    • Hard Candy for Prizes

Grading: Grading will be done on a point system. Below is how many times they will count in the gradebook. To find out your grade you do: points earned/points possible=%

**Late Work Policy: Students who are absent on test/quiz days will be allowed to make up the test/quiz within 3 days of their absence. All other late homework/classwork is not accepted. Turn in work on time and make up absent work in the alloted time. One missing assignment will not damage your grade.

Discipline: Please refer to the Swords of Success Criteria in regards to discipline.

Extra Credit: This is a high school level class and needs to be taken seriously.  The ONLY way you can earn extra credit throughout this course is through IXL.  When you are assigned an IXL, you will be given a smart score to achieve such as 90%.  If you reach that 90% you recieve full credit, but if you choose to go above that 90% it will go in as extra credit points.

Responsibility and Accountability: As mentioned above, this is a high school level class. Passing of the SOL and your grade in the class carry over to your high school GPA and graduation.  You need to keep up with your grades. You need to be responsible.  You need to self advocate when you need help.  The only dumb question is the one that was not asked.

Due Dates: All due dates and assessment dates will be posted on the calendar on this website. Please check there first, and if you still have questions, e-mail me.

Parent Contact: Parents will be contacted if there is a discipline problem, or if the student’s grade is low. For low grades (D or F), I will call parents only at midterms (halfway through the quarter), and at report card time (end of the quarter).  It is very important that students and parents keep track of grades as well as the teacher.  If you have a question about a grade at any time, contact me.  Feel free to e-mail with questions or concerns, but know that sometimes I will respond with a phone call, or my email will include a document for the response per Henry County e-mail policy. I will do my best to respond within 24 hours. The best times to e-mail me are between 8:00 and 3:30 each day.
