    Class Concepts: The eight-grade standards are intended to serve two purposes.  First, the standards contain content that reviews or extends concepts and skills learned in previous grades. Second, they contain new content that prepares students for more abstract concepts and skills necessary for success in Algebra 1.

    Expectations for Student Success:

    • I expect the students to employ responsibility 
    • Attendance is important. You cannot learn if you are not here. (Make sure you check out the school attendance policy)
    • Make sure that if you do not understand, that you communicate to the teacher. I cannot read minds. Please let me know if you are struggling and I will help you as best as I can. If you are uncomfortable asking a question in class, please find me at the beginning of school, lunch, or hall time.
    • Students are expected to be respectful of the teacher, the other students in the class, and of themselves. Disruptive behavior is not tolerated. 
    • All work is expected to be neat and completed in pencil! 
    • Not all work assigned in class will be graded, but is expected to be completed! Everything completed in class is important and given for a reason.  If it is not graded it is practice for your quiz or test which is a grade. 
    • When you enter the classroom, get ready to work! It is ok to make mistakes and ask for help, but it is absolutely unacceptable to not try!  When asked to answer a question in class, please respond. If you do not know the answer I will help you. 

    Small Groups: 

    If I am working with a student individually or in small groups I expect you to be working on your assignment.  Each student deserves attention and if I have to keep stopping then this is unfair for the students.

    If I pull you for a small group it is to help you understand better.  This is an opportunity and everyone will be pulled for a small group at some point.  

    Materials Needed: Students are EXPECTED to come to class prepared EVERY day.

    Required: Binder, Paper (notebook/graph), PENCILS

    Optional: Colored Pencils, highlighters, scissors, glue

    *Note: If student needs to borrow a pencil from the teacher for class, they will trade the teacher something to hold on to (cell phone, wallet, keys) until the student returns the teachers materials. A lot of the time I am paying for pencils so I want to make sure they stay with me.

     

    Grading Policy: Everything will be on a point system. Grades MAY be obtained by the following

    To determine the average on an assignment or total average: 

    points earned/total points possible= %

    Extra Credit will ONLY be given on IXL assignments. If  you are assigned an IXL assignment and given a goal, say 90%, this means that if you achieve a 90% then you will receive full credit for the assignment. If you achieve above a 90% then that will be counted as extra credit.

    Class Rules: 

    *All school wide rules are assumed to be followed: No cell phones in class (can be confiscated), do not be late (results in a strike), take care of business during hall time such as bathroom breaks, follow the golden rule, raise your hand!

    Discipline Policy: Refer to Swords for Success School Discipline Policy

    1st offense- Strike, verbal warnings, parent contact

    2nd offense- Strike, parent contact, 2 days of silent lunch, loss of small reward for the 

                    month

    3rd offense- Strike, parent contact, 5 days of silent lunch, Behavior action plan created by

                    an administrator or guidance counselor, warning to parent and student that

                    an infraction after that will be an automatic referral 

    *Discipline issues of a more serious nature will be dealt with immediately with an administrator

    Homework Policies and Due Dates: Homework will rarely be assigned.  If you respect my time and work in class, then I will respect your time and give you no homework.  If it is not finished in class, it is expected to be finished at home. There may be weekly assignments such as IXL that can be worked on at home. All due dates will be posted on the calendar on this webpage. Please check there for assessment dates and other due dates.  If you still have a question, contact me.

    Absent Work: Absent work will be in the class absent folder at the front of the class. It is the STUDENT’s responsibility to retrieve the absent work. It is also the student’s responsibility to meet with the teacher and ask questions on content missed, or questions they may have. The work will be turned in no later than 3 days after return. 

    Late Work: Every day an assignment is turned in late there will be a point deduction.  If you do not have your assignment on the due date, students are encouraged to still turn it in late, any credit is better than a 0!

    ** If an assignment is not turned in, whether due to incompletion OR absence, a 0 will be put into the gradebook to keep up with an accurate representation of the students grade.  In the case of absence, the work will be made up and the grade will be changed when completed.

    No Name Work: If the work does not have a name on it, it will be posted in the front of the room at the time that papers are being handed out. At the end of the day the unclaimed papers will be discarded. It is the student’s responsibility to check the board to make sure that the papers are not theirs, and if it is, the student MUST tell the teacher so the grade can be entered. 

    Tutoring: If a student needs tutoring, please reach out to teacher to come up with a schedule. 

    Rewards: Reminder for parents and students, for small and big rewards the student must have at least a D in all classes to be able to participate regardless of behavior.



    PARENTS PLEASE READ THE BELOW SECTION VERY CAREFULLY AND SIGN/RETURN BELOW:

     

    Parent Contact: Parents will be contacted if there is a discipline problem, or if the student’s grade is low. For low grades (D or F), I will call parents only at midterms (halfway through the quarter), and at report card time (end of the quarter).  It is very important that students and parents keep track of grades as well as the teacher.  If you have a question about a grade at any time, contact me.  Feel free to e-mail with questions or concerns, but know that sometimes I will respond with a phone call, or my email will include a document for the response per Henry County e-mail policy. I will do my best to respond within 24 hours. The best times to e-mail me are between 8:00 and 3:30 each day.
