Degrees and Certifications:
Kevin Lewis attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. While at JMU, Mr. Lewis studied trumpet with James Kluesner and Dr. Chris Magee. Lewis served as soloist and section leader in the Marching Royal Dukes and performed in the JMU Jazz Ensemble, Wind Symphony and the Symphony Orchestra. In the summers, Lewis worked in the entertainment department at King’s Dominion Theme Park and performed in the Summer Rhythms and Dancing in the Street Shows. He received his Master’s degree in Music Curriculum and Instruction from Longwood University in 2008. He is a native of Martinsville, Virginia and has directed students of all ages in band programs for over 25 years. Under Lewis’ direction, bands have performed in Toronto, numerous times at Disney World, Universal Studios-Orlando, Virginia Beach, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach, Baltimore, and on 3 occasions marched in the Washington D.C St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Bands were selected to perform for the 2006 Governor’s Inaugural parade in Williamsburg, Virginia and the 2014 Inaugural parade of Terry McAuliffe. In addition, bands have played the National Anthem at nationally televised Fall races at Martinsville Speedway and in 2011, he was named as Virginia’s representative in the 50 directors that make a difference by School Band and Orchestra magazine. In 2015, Lewis began work at Laurel Park Middle School in the Henry County school system and is excited to now work with the students at Magna Vista High School. He has performed with recording artists, Percy Sledge and Jerry Butler, and groups including the Commonwealth Brass Quintet, Sunset Drive and the jazz combo, The Five Brothers. In addition to playing the trumpet professionally in our region, Lewis serves on various committees of the Piedmont Arts Association, has served on the board of Theatre Works of Martinsville and Henry County and currently coordinates and directs the Patrick Henry Community College Jazz Band.
