Bassett High School
2021-2022 COURSE SYLLABUS
Mrs. Laura Jones
According to the Henry County Program of Studies, the tenth-grade student will:
“will continue to use multimodal tools to create presentations both independently and in small groups. Students will continue the development of vocabulary, with attention to connotations, idioms, classical allusions, and figurative language. There is a sustained emphasis on reading comprehension by comparing fiction and nonfiction texts. Students will use the recursive writing process while writing in a variety of forms with an emphasis on analysis and persuasion. They will produce arguments in writing that demonstrate knowledgeable judgments and address counterclaims. Students will be expected to have greater control over the conventions of writing and write and revise to a standard acceptable both in the workplace and postsecondary education. Students will apply research techniques to analyze information gathered from diverse sources, evaluate the validity and authenticity of sources, and apply research techniques to quote, summarize, paraphrase, and embed findings.”
The following tools are recommended to help keep you organized: (when we return to school)
Binder (any size) or folder to organize handouts and assignments
Composition Notebook (not spiral)
Loose leaf paper
Pens or pencils
Units of Study:
- GRAMMAR AND MECHANICS
- PERSUASIVE WRITING
- NONFICTION AND FICTION WORKS
Unexcused late assignments will be subject to a 5 point per day grade penalty. Band or athletic trips will not excuse a student from any required work. If a student is absent the day of a test, the student must be prepared to take the missed test the next day the class meets. Being absent before an assignment is due or before a test does not excuse the student from turning in the assignment or from taking the test on the scheduled day. HCPS Attendance Policy states that any student who accumulates 5 or more unexcused absences in a class, in one grading semester, shall lose credit for the class with a 59.
Cell phones are not to be used in class except for EDUCATIONAL purposes and at the direction of the teacher. Your phone must be placed in the rack as you enter the class.
I am available to give assistance on makeup work and/or extra help after school by appointment. Please notify me ahead of time if you need to stay. If you feel lost in class, please take the initiative and ask for help!
