Course description: The sixth grade language arts course is based upon the English Reading and English Writing Standards of Learning. Instruction integrates vocabulary and word study, the writing process, and comprehension of fiction and nonfiction texts. Students will work to create multimodal presentations individually and collaboratively while continuing to build skills in reading, writing, communication, and research.
Topics to cover:
- Reading: Students will read and comprehend a variety of texts including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.
- Writing: Students will develop their writing skills by working with expository, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive pieces.
- Vocabulary: Students will become independent vocabulary learners. They will learn to identify word origins, use roots, cognates, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms.
- Oral Language: Students will enhance their oral language by participating in group and partner activities, listening critically, and presenting to their peers.
