    LPMS ART Ms. Rucker (mrucker@henry.k12.va.us)

    Welcome to Art Class!

“Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.” George Bernard Shaw

Through this course you will be given the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and techniques used to create unique pieces of art. We will touch on each element and principle of art and explore various movements and styles. We will delve into art history and discover how art as we know it came to be. Expect to be challenged. I know at times art can seem overwhelming, but don’t be intimidated, approach it as an opportunity to express yourself. Keep in mind there is no specific right outcome; we are here to find different paths in creation. You will see growth in your work if you keep putting your best effort forward, so don’t give up; you will create things that will surprise you!

    Grading:

Grades are mainly derived from assigned projects and class participation. If you show effort, understanding, and improvement, you will be very successful. Students will be asked to fill out self-assessments for larger projects and reflect on assignments in sketchbooks. (We will go over this process).

    Rules/Procedures:

    1. BE RESPECTFUL: THINK! Display respect for self, teacher, peers, and art materials. Keep your hands, feet, and negativity to yourself. Use inside voices.
    2. BE RESPONSIBILE: Be prepared; always have a pencil and ipad. Use materials for their intended purpose and follow acceptable use policies. Be sure to clean up after yourself and return materials to appropriate locations.
    3. BE PRODUCTIVE: SLANT. Be creative, do your own work. Stay on task.

There will be several routine procedures that the students must follow to ensure the art classroom runs smoothly and in order, we will go over these procedures in class. Good behavior will be rewarded every quarter, but failure to meet these rules will result in consequences set by the Lancer Code.

There will be art shows throughout the year for students to exhibit their artwork. Information and dates will be sent out. I will be hosting an afterschool Art Club that will meet at set times throughout the school year. Let me know if you are interested and I will send out more information on that as well.

Thank you and I look forward to having you in class! ~ Ms. Rucker
