Dissemination of Information and Reporting
Confidentiality
- All incidents, violations of law, or anything of whatever nature involving students, handled by the SRO, will be dealt with in a confidential manner, according to existing law and in accordance with school policy.
- Law enforcement agencies are required to notify the Superintendent or her designee when a student in HCPS commits certain offenses that would be a felony if committed by an adult and the release status of the student as provided for in VA Code 22.1-279.3:1. The Superintendent is required to report the information to the principal of the school in which the student is enrolled.
Public Information and Press Releases
- In the event of a violation of law by a current or former employee of HCPS, or when a current employee is the subject of a police investigation, the Sheriff and the Superintendent or their designees will work collaboratively to share information with the public in a manner that is mutually acceptable to the mission and goals of each partner organization.
- In some cases, the HCPS may find it necessary to communicate with a specific school audience about disruptions that were based on substantiated or unsubstantiated claims.
- Both partner organizations should be mindful of opportunities to share positive stories of collaboration between HCPS and HCSO with the media and with the public in print, video, and social media platforms.
