Superintendent's Starfish Award
In an effort to showcase some of the remarkable individuals working for Henry County Public Schools (HCPS), school community members are encouraged to recognize staff members by nominating them for a Superintendent's Starfish Award. The Starfish Award is an award for substantive achievement, to be given throughout the year, to individual staff members of HCPS who have been nominated by their peers or supervisors for performing tasks or services in an exemplary manner, or have improved the quality of life in a department or school.
Nominations for this award should be based on employees who:
- consistently exceed expectations
- contribute in an exemplary manner
- significantly improve processes or quality of life
- make exceptional contributions to their office/department, school, or division as a whole in support of enVision 2018
- assume leadership roles that have benefited others
Any employee of HCPS may nominate another employee for this recognition. Parents, students, and community members may also nominate a HCPS employee for the award.
Quarterly, Dr. Cotton will deliver Starfish Award certificates and pins to recipients in their assigned schools or individual departments.
Award winners will be featured in the Superintendent's Monthly Report to the School Board (to occur the month following the selection process) and will also be featured in HCPS publications and social media forums.
The Starfish Story
from Loren Eiseley's "Star Thrower"
As a wise man was walking along the shore one day, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, so he walked faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.
He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."
Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."
