Both Steps 1 and 2 must be completed and received, and both of those background screens cleared BEFORE a volunteer badge can be issued!
Thank you for your interest in working with the students of Henry County Public Schools (HCPS). To help ensure the safety and security of our students, faculty and staff, HCPS requires that all employees and all volunteers undergo comprehensive background screenings. As a volunteer, your required background screens will include both a criminal background check ($16.95) and a Virginia Department of Social Services Central Registry Search ($10.00). Here is how the process works:
Step 1: Click here to complete and submit an online application for the criminal background check using Secure Volunteer. The application process will require that you submit credit card information to pay for your criminal background check in the amount of $16.95. If your application is accepted, your credit card will be charged. Once charged, you will receive the following email notification:
This email is a confirmation of your background screen application you submitted through the Secure Volunteer website of Henry County Public Schools. We have charged your credit card in the amount of $16.95.
Once your background screen has been conducted, you will receive an update regarding your application approval. Thank you for choosing to volunteer and for using Secure Volunteer.
Step 2: Once the above email confirmation has been received, click here to access a Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS) Central Registry Release of Information Form. By completing the DSS form, you are authorizing the release of your personal information, and this requires the services of a notary. All school offices and the human resources department have Notary Publics who can notarize your form. Please follow directions for completion of the form. Rather than mailing your completed form to the Virginia Department of Social Services, however, please take your completed form and money order or cashier’s check in the amount of $10.00 to the office of the school where you will be volunteering. Please make payable to the Virginia Department of Social Services. If obtaining background checks to student teach or to complete an internship or practicum within HCPS, please return your form and payment to the human resources department at the School Board Office (Henry County Administration Building, Third Floor, 3300 King’s Mountain Road, Collinsville, VA 24078). The form and payment will be sent to the Virginia Department of Social Services on your behalf by Henry County Schools.
Step 3: After clearing both volunteer screenings, you will receive another email notification from Secure Volunteer:
Congratulations! Your volunteer application for Henry County Public Schools has been approved. You should receive your ID card within 14 business days.
The card will be mailed to the address you provided. Until you receive your card, please use this email as a temporary card. Please present this email, along with a government-issued photo ID, when volunteering.

Once this process is complete, you will be ready to volunteer! The DSS search takes approximately 4-6 weeks, so please plan ahead if you are planning to chaperone a field trip or other scheduled event. Your volunteer screenings are valid for 3 years, and the expiration date will be printed on your ID card. You will receive a reminder email when your screenings are about to expire and need to be renewed. Please enjoy your time working with the students, faculty and staff of Henry County Schools!
