Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Joel Bunn

I have my degrees from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. These include a B.S. and and an M.A. in Biology with an emphasis on Botany, and additional training in Wetlands and Ecology. I have worked outside of academia as a Supervisor in Colonial Williamsburg's Landscape Department, and have also served on the faculty of Virginia Tech as an Extension Agent in 4-H Youth Development. I have been chairman for several years of the Virginia 4-H Plants, Soils and Entomology Curriculum Committee. I enjoyed working with students in environmental fields and found I love teaching, so I pursued and received certification to teach through a professional career switcher program. I began teaching with Gloucester County in the 2007-2008 school year, and love working with the students. I moved to Henry County in 2010 and have taught at Magna Vista since then.

I like to get my hands dirty - literally. I'm a gardener and digger of earth. I like to feel living soil between my fingers, and I intend for my students to have that opportunity! I like watching birds, and animals and insects, and digging up rocks, and playing in streams and creeks, and talking about everything that exists in the world outside.

I was raised on a farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, a region rich in geological heritage and history. It also had some pretty sweet trout fishing, and so it's no surprise that my favorite book is "A River Runs Through It" by Norman Maclean. It has a lot to teach us about Earth Science, Biology, and most importantly, life and family.

I believe in students as people. I have never met a student I don’t like. I may not like or approve of all of their choices and behaviors, but I respect each one of them for who they are. I want my students to succeed and am always prepared to go the extra mile to provide that opportunity.
